How to make your job work for you

Using the Life Skills Approach to improve job satisfaction

When I first began my work with people who were dealing with chronic illness, I focused on showing them that WHO had the illness was more important than the illness itself. In fact, I showed them that they could use their illness as an tool to answer the all-important question: “Who am I?”

Since then, I’ve expanded my work to include people facing difficulties at work. Using the same techniques I developed for chronically ill people, I show clients that WHO has a job is more important than the job itself, and whether you like your job or not, your focus should be on WHO is doing the work, which can be the key to a wonderful new quality of life.

The process begins by reframing your situation. Think of the parts of your job that cause you discomfort as a source of DIS-EASE. The same qualities that are required to become an active patient are necessary for you to begin making your job work for you. By changing your perspective, you change the way you view your job, which will lead to new habits that will make things better—in every phase of your life.

Once you’ve begun developing new attitudes about your work environment, you’ll begin seeing your entire world and all your relationships in a new way. Your performance on the job will improve, your chances for advancement will increase, and your relationships with people will improve as you begin to feel more empowered and better about yourself.

Over the past twenty-three years, I’ve encouraged people facing health challenges to tap into what I call the Wisdom of the Body. This inner wisdom operates every function of your body with amazing precision. Our thinking minds don’t have the ability to perform such a sophisticated process, yet our entire focus during the day is on our thoughts.

Once you become aware of a beyond-thought reality and allow it to become an integrated part of your character, you’ll have a new power to control your attitude and your interactions with others, on the job and off. As human beings, we tend to try to change the world around us when we want to change our attitude, but it’s you who creates your attitude—not the world.

In my Life Skills seminars, I teach practical techniques that help people develop attitudes that reflect their true potential and enable them to effectively deal with job challenges.

If you follow the Life Skills approach for six weeks, using two 15-minute sessions a day, you’ll develop habits that will help you learn to trust the Wisdom of your Body and enable you to respond to everything in your life without the limitations of your thinking mind. Your job will become a blessing, and the challenges you experience at work will be transformed into opportunities to become a better person.
